Margaret Garcia (nicknamed Maggie), a brilliant doctor who became the youngest person to receive the highest medical degree, the Golden Bachelor's degree, encounters a strange man on her way to Reitel, the town where she grew up. This man, Mikael Largeness, is covered in scars and claims to be a hunter. After treating Mikael's wounds and learning that he is also headed to Reitel, Maggie hires him as her bodyguard. However, as soon as they arrived in Reitel, Maggie was arrested on suspicion of assassinating the bishop.
