Tensho 1 (1573) , Azai Nagamasa, the lord of Otani Castle, was attacked by Oda Nobunaga and committed suicide, and his wife Oichi was taken back to his brother Nobunaga along with their three daughters. However, Asai's eldest son, Manpukumaru, has been secretly taken away from the castle! When Nobunaga learned of this, he ordered Tokichiro Kinoshita to search for Manpukumaru. Blinded by the extraordinary reward of a piece of gold, the soldiers chase after Manpukumaru in a frantic manner. Among these soldiers were three men named Hiyoshi, Sugoroku, and Tombo. Hiyoshi has the same name as Tokichiro Kinoshita, but he can't get promoted and can't stand being a casual soldier. Sugoroku, who has just joined the group of casual soldiers, dreams of advancing his career. And Tombo, who survived as a casual soldier for 50 years, is called the "living god" by the casual soldiers. Indeed, these three people, all with completely different personalities, all set out to explore Manpukumaru...
